Lesson step-by-step
1. Pretest — 10 minutes
Distribute copies of the first quiz to use as a pretest. Students may compare with a partner to see how they did.
2. Guided practice — 15 minutes
Use a projection device to show the lines of the quiz one at a time and have students comment on which ones are misspelled. Allow students to give any hints they may have learned for the spelling of some of the words. For example, there’s “a rat” in separate. Provide the correct answer for each line.
3. Discussion — 5 minutes
As a class, talk about how this type of spelling test is different from calling out words and having students spell them in isolation.
4. Practice — 20 minutes
Distribute lists of frequently misspelled words. Go through each one on the projector. Explain any tricks you know and refer to strategies previously offered by students.
5. Ongoing practice
Announce dates of spelling tests. Give the remaining spelling tests at weekly intervals. Allow students to test out once they have mastered the list with 90 percent accuracy.
