Introduction to basic exposure

Description
This lesson is three days long.  At the beginning of each class period, students will learn about one of the different aspects of exposure (ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture).  Then, the teacher will provide opportunities for students to practice those techniques and think critically about how the techniques can be adapted in many different photo-taking scenarios.

Objectives

  • Students will learn factual information about different exposure techniques, including aperture, ISO and shutter speed.
  • Students will practice different exposure techniques so that they feel more comfortable using them outside of the classroom.

Common Core State Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.IT.9-10.7 Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person’s life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account.

Length

Three 45-minute lessons.

Resources

Slideshow: Basics of exposure

Handout: Practice activities

Lesson step-by-step

Day 1:

1. (5 minutes) Discuss: what does it mean to “expose” something?  How does that relate to a camera and camera settings?

Show students the presentation slide on “Exposure.”  Explain: “exposure” is both a specific setting on the camera AND a general term that applies to many other settings that can be adjusted.  For this unit, we will not be discussing the exposure setting but instead several of the important aspects of exposure.

2. (15 minutes) Go through Presentation information for Shutter Speed.

3. (30 minutes) Depending on student knowledge and understanding of the skill, have students perform different guided practice activities.  See the handout called Practice Activities for ideas.

Day 2:

1. (5 minutes). Review exposure and shutter speed information from yesterday.

2. (15 minutes) Go through Presentation information for Aperture.

3. (30 minutes) Depending on student knowledge and understanding of the skill, have students perform different guided practice activities.  See the handout called Practice Activities for ideas.

Day 3:

1. (5 minutes). Review Aperture information from yesterday.

2. (15 minutes) Go through Presentation information for ISO.

3. (30 minutes) Depending on student knowledge and understanding of the skill, have students perform different guided practice activities.  See the handout called Practice Activities for ideas.
