Final photojournalism portfolios


During this one and a half week lesson, students will create and present a final portfolio that showcases their learning about photography and photojournalism over the past semester.


  • Students will take photos that represent their learning regarding a variety of photography and photojournalism techniques.
  • Students will prepare portfolios in a way that showcases their learning.
  • Students will present portfolios to small groups in the class and use instant feedback to improve their presentation skills.

Common Core State Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.4 Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.

Eight 45-minute classes

To adjust this lesson for a nine-week unit, give students three days to work in class and ask questions of the teacher. However, there would be no presentation aspect of the portfolios.

Unit guidelines

The following guidelines may be used for how to break up this 1 1/2 week timeframe:

Significantly prior to the beginning of this lesson, give students the handout with expectations and requirements for their portfolio. This will allow students to plan and execute the different photos that they need to take, prior to the in-class work days for this lesson.

Day 1-5: Portfolio Work Days — encourage students to use this time to develop their portfolio by following whatever guidelines the teacher has set forth.

Day 6-8: Student portfolio presentations —  follow the lesson step-by-step instructions below for one method of presenting portfolios in small groups as a way of minimizing student nerves, encouraging better engagement and allowing other students to provide instant feedback.

Lesson step-by-step

Student presentation days

1. Introduction — 5 minutes

Go over guidelines and expectations for today.

*Since presentations will take three days, one third of your class will present on each day. Split the class into groups with one presenter in each group.  (For instance, if your class is 15 students, you will have 5 students presenting today in five different groups.)  Spread out presenters around the room and make sure they have access to a laptop, computer, or iPad.

2. Presentations — 10-12 minutes

Presenters should use the laptop or computer to present their portfolios to other students in the small group.  Once they finish, students who were listening to the group should complete a Presentation Feedback Form and give it to the presenter.  The presenter should take a minute to look through the feedback.

3. Continue presentations— 10-12 minutes

Have presenters stay in the same place and the rest of the class rotate around the room. Repeat presentations and feedback.

5. Debrief — 5 minutes

Debrief with students. Repeat this process on the other two presentation days.
